What we did
Williamsburg County is situated in South Carolina’s Pee Dee region and has a population of approximately 31,000. Its county seat, Kingstree, is the largest city in a county known historically for colonial-era indigo and rice production and today for the natural areas that draw outdoor recreation. Located just inland from the Atlantic coast and southwest of Myrtle Beach, the county faced the question of how to house emergency operations as its aging downtown administrative building reached the end of its useful life for that purpose. The Center for Public Safety was engaged to conduct a space needs study for a new emergency operations center, establishing the program requirements for the function and then testing those requirements against available options. After CPS evaluated several alternatives, a site near Kingstree’s recreational complex emerged as the prime location for the new facility, addressing the county’s need for updated infrastructure to serve its community. The study gives Williamsburg County both a defined program and a site direction to carry forward.
