The engagement
What we did
Provincetown is located on the far tip of Cape Cod and has become a major seasonal tourist destination. The town’s year-round population of approximately 2,400 rises to roughly 40,000 during the summer and fall months, placing substantial strain on town services including the police department. The department was housed in a former funeral home about two blocks off the main street, a wood-framed and shingled structure that had been renovated multiple times in an effort to accommodate modern police functions. The Center for Public Safety provided the town with a space needs study establishing current and future requirements for the department, and examined several sites that would be more appropriate for a purpose-designed law enforcement facility. The engagement is representative of CPS’s work in seasonal-surge communities, where facility and staffing requirements must be sized against a peak operating condition that bears little resemblance to the off-season baseline, and where limited land availability makes site selection as consequential as program definition.
