The engagement
What we did
The Pelham-Batesville Fire District is a volunteer fire department serving the communities of Pelham and Batesville, South Carolina. Formed in 1959, the district operates as a special district fire operation, neither a city nor a county entity, with a governing board appointed by the Governor, and it is situated half in Greenville County and half in Spartanburg County, just south of the Greenville-Spartanburg Airport beneath the approaching flight path. Its main station also houses fire administration on a property with no capacity for future expansion, adjacent to a growing hospital and medical complex with its own expansion plans. The Center for Public Safety was retained to conduct a space needs study addressing current and future requirements, to evaluate sites for a new complex, and to explore adding a large multipurpose space within the new facility. CPS programmed a multipurpose space with food preparation, storage, pantry, AV, and lobby access, separated from the fire bays and firefighter living quarters, intended to be rented to generate revenue supporting community outreach and the district’s general fund. CPS was subsequently retained to assist with design team selection, preparing the RFQ, receiving and grading submittals, and recommending the final team.
