River Vale Police & Municipal Court Study
CPS developed a space needs study combining River Vale’s police department and municipal court into a single facility, working within a landlocked community where much of the remaining open space is undevelopable watershed.
The engagement
What we did
River Vale is located in Bergen County, New Jersey, north of New York City. Its police department was housed in a former Department of Public Works facility, still adjacent to active public works operations and storage structures, and the community sought to relocate the department to a purpose-appropriate site. The Center for Public Safety worked with the police department and the courts to create a space needs study that would incorporate both entities into a single consolidated facility. Consolidation carried particular weight in River Vale because the community is effectively landlocked, and much of its remaining green space is watershed land that cannot be developed under any circumstances, so any solution had to make efficient use of a very limited set of viable sites. The study established the combined current and future program for police and court functions, giving the township the technical basis to pursue a single facility serving both operations.
