Byram Public Safety Facility Study

CPS reviewed and evaluated several property parcels of varying sizes in and around Byram for use as a public safety facility, including court services and potential co-location of additional city departments.

The engagement

What we did

Byram is a recently incorporated municipality south of Jackson, Mississippi’s capital. As a new city, Byram placed departments into available existing spaces where possible, with the police department moving into a four-unit commercial strip and a small parking area behind the facility. As the city matured it became clear that space would be at a premium and that a purpose-planned approach was needed. The city asked the Center for Public Safety to review several property parcels of various sizes in and around the city and evaluate each for possible use as a public safety facility, with court services included in the program. CPS’s study was structured to enable the city to choose among the candidate parcels on an informed basis, and to identify where a selected site would also create the opportunity to co-locate additional city departments, an efficiency particularly valuable to a young municipality still consolidating its facility footprint.
