What we did

Sandy Springs, one of Georgia’s newer incorporated municipalities in northern Fulton County, chose law enforcement and a municipal court among the services it would provide under state law at incorporation. As the police department grew, it relocated several times before settling into an office complex, with the municipal court occupying nearby space in the same complex. Both functions eventually outgrew that space as officers were hired and trained, and departmental needs expanded across records, evidence, vehicle processing, and training. Physical training was conducted at a separate leased location in the city, weapons certification and training took place at a private range that required scheduling around the facility’s availability, and additional training and specialized units were housed at yet another leased location. The city engaged the Center for Public Safety to develop an understanding of current and future spatial needs in order to consolidate these dispersed functions into a facility purpose-designed for police and court operations, one that would deliver efficient space use, reduce annual costs to the city, and provide staff and visitors a safe and functional environment.
