The engagement
What we did
Florida Polytechnic University joined the Florida higher education system as its newest member, created and constructed on raw land adjacent to Interstate 4. As a new institution, the university housed its public safety function initially in a single-wide trailer, later expanded by connecting a second trailer. The Center for Public Safety was retained by the university to conduct a spatial needs assessment addressing both current requirements and the spatial needs of the public safety department as the institution grows in the years ahead. CPS examined sites around the main campus with the goal of providing information the university could use to relocate the department to a permanent, purpose-built facility. The engagement is characteristic of work for young and rapidly developing institutions, where the public safety program must be sized not for present enrollment but for the trajectory the campus is on, and where site decisions made early shape operational effectiveness for decades.
